Paddle
Surfing Competition
Format
Paddlers will be separated into their different classes;
men's kayak masters (K-1MM), men's kayak (K-1M), women's kayak (K-1W), closed canoe (C-1), and junior kayak (K-1Jr.). There will be
junior, beginner, sport, pro, masters and high
performance classes. The
junior, beginner, sport, pro and masters classes will be scored on moves done
on the wave and in the foam pill (freestyle). The high performance class will be judged on moves done on the face of the wave.
Competitors will be judged by the total of there best three rides.
Rides will be judged by wave selection and take off, the body of the
ride, and discretionary points - end move for high performance. 1-10 points will be given for
wave selection and take off. 1-20 points will be given for the
body of the ride. 1-10 discretionary points will be
awarded last. In high performance the last 1-10 points will be
awarded for the end move.
There will be 19 minute heats, with
up to four competitors per heat. The best
four scores will proceed to the final round. Each competitor will have a different coloured bib on over there PFD. The competition area will be within a 100m long stretch of beach
which will be marked with flags. One blasts of the horn and a
green flag will start the heat. Two blasts of the horn and a
yellow flag indicates there is five minutes left in the heat.
Three blasts of the horn and a red flag indicates the heat is over.
Three continuous blasts of the horn and a black flag indicates there is
an emergency. This means every competitor is to come in
immediately. If you start your ride within the flags but finish outside the flags your ride will be counted. The paddler closest to the pocket (break) owns that wave. Two competitors can ride the same wave providing they surf in opposite directions of the break. The judges will call interference if it is necessary.
Here is the
judging format. The judging format will be posted at the judging tent (which will be
located on the beach), on the Saturday morning of the competition.

Beach Use Etiquette
This event will be held
at Cox Bay. We had to get a permit from the District of Tofino and
the Ministry to use the beach for our competition. This being said, there are rules and regulations each participant must adhere too:
Absolutely no consumption of alcoholic beverages on the beach or in the parking lot.
You pack it in, you pack it out. Keep it clean!
No fires allowed on the beach.
No dogs off the leash.
Common sense prevailing, we will be allowed to use this location for years to come.
Surf Etiquette
Surf
rules apply to kayak's as they do to any ocean user. Standard wave-use
etiquette established by the surfing community applies. If you are
not savvy to these rules, I would suggest you check out this site:
Surf Etiquette for Kayakers
The
Basics
The closest person to the pocket (break), has the right of way. Two surfers per wave provided they are on opposite sides of the break and surf in opposite directions. Do not go out through the surf zone. Respect all users; it's a public beach and we have no more right to it than the next person. Find a wave set away from other users to avoid crowding. Surf in control at all times. No person or group owns the surf or any part of it! The rules apply to all users with no exceptions. Keep in mind - kayaks will catch more rides, more often than board surfers - there's no need to crowd an area that is working for boarders unless it is ok to do so.
