Hey Forum Members,

I am new to Nanaimo and am really excited about finally getting in to white water kayaking. I have a pair of Necky Jives + all the necessary equipment. My only challenge is that I have NEVER been in the river with them.

I am an active ocean kayaking instructor, and bought my boats several years ago with the intention of getting in to the sport. However, up until recently I lived in White Rock, and unfortuanely the Nicomekl and the Serpentive River (more like ditches) are not exactly white water.

I have spent a some time in my boat surfing in tofino, and can do an eskimo roll (although I am a bit out of practice), I have just never been in a river. I have decnt general paddling skills, great boat balance, not much fear, and stay fit.

I am looking for some more experienced paddlers that want to help me learn the ways of the river and show me the local spots on Vancouver Island. I have van and can transport a lot of kayaks and people.

So if anyone is looking for a paddling buddy, and wants to show a keen newbie the ropes. drop me an email at johncooper(at)combatathletics.com

Thanks and I look forward to meeting some of you.

Not a problem. You are more than welcome to come out with me when I am back on the Island (which will not be for a bit as I am stuck in Toronto). I think that the Cowichan river would be a great place for you to start, and the Jive is a great boat for learning in, I used one for years, and I still keep it around for certain things.

Right on! Thanks for the reply. Drop me a line when you get back. My schedule is pretty flexible at the moment.

George is a good guy to paddle with. It wont matter what your paddling skills are, you will still look like a pro when put beside him. :D

This is pretty much true! I actually swam *TWICE* on the Cowichan last time out - first swim(s) in a few years.

Not only that, I swam in 1+, 2- areas!

I need to lay off the crack. ;)
