Hello paddlers,
The Canada West Paddler Surf Fest is just around the corner and the crunch is on. We still need volunteers for both Friday night and Saturday throughout the day. If anyone is interested please send me a quick email, even if its only an hour you can spare. We can use all the help we can get. Not to mention, the executive members want some wave time too and the only way that's going to happen is if YOU volunteer! Thanks for your support in helping us make this another amazing festival.

How is this event judged?
- Paddlers compete in 20 minute heats. - Points are added together from the best 3 scores and final standings are by points.
Each wave can receive 13 points
Wave selection - Up to 3 points
The closer to the “sweet spot” of the wave, the more points.
1- foam pile start
2- 2 green into foam
3- green toward green
Body of Ride – up to 7 points
Judges will be looking for control and skill. Paddlers that can maintain a “presence” on the wave by carving, cut-backs and stringing moves like back & front surfs and spins together will score higher than paddlers that repeat the same maneuver repetitively.
Competitors that do not respect surf etiquette towards their other competitors will be docked marks.
Discretionary points – up to 3 points
In the beginner class, marks will be given for rolls and effort given. In more advanced categories, judges are looking for the “wow” factor. In the High Performance category, judges are looking for ending moves that get the paddler off the wave before it is completely broken.
In High Performance, judges stop judging once the paddler has completely entered the foam pile. Moves in the foam pile DO NOT count for marks!
What is High Performance?
High performance is the label given to boats that are designed to surf in the ocean just like surf boards. They are usually of composite material and can be fitted with fins. HP boats are trying to carve on the “green face” of a wave, not play in the foam pile.
Last year, VIWPS helped send 3 paddlers to Spain to attend the World Surf Kayak Championships. Two of these paddlers are VIWPS members – Kevin Lewis and Will Brice. The third – Val Bertrand (of Rapid Mag. fame) won gold in her category for Canada!
Please see Will Brice if you are interested in attending the 2009 Championships in Portugal!
